Full name: Stephen Slatcher

Worked as a computing professional since 1988, as a software engineer and in the field of usability. Wide ranging knowledge of Web technologies, with an recent emphasis on C# and ASP.NET, with J2EE and applications of XML before that.

Specific technical skills include C#, ASP.NET, XML schema design, use of existing XMLs, XSLT, JavaScript, J2EE, PHP, Perl CGI, Visual Basic, ASP, and OO analysis, design and programming.

Native English, Norwegian, and smatterings of a number of other European languages. Other interests include wine and the the history of architecture.

Background in the physical sciences, with over 8 years research experience and 14 publications.

Software Engineer (1999-2005)
Various responsiblities at Scientia, almost all of which are Web-related. Initially keeping track of Web technology developments and communicating them to the rest of the company. More recently delivering custom Web applications, and then working on a longer term .NET development project.

Usability Engineer (1998-1999)
User interface design at Smallworldwide plc, now part of GE Energy. Contextual inquiry, paper prototyping, prototyping using RAD tools, and evaluation of user interfaces.

Software Engineer (1996-1998)
With Sysdeco UK Ltd, now part of ESRI (UK), developing Geographic Information Systems based on UNIX, Windows, and industry standard databases. Also responsible for the design and implementation of the company's websites, and the prototyping of its Web GIS system.

Software Engineer (1992-1996)
Working for Marcial Echenique and Partners, a firm of consultants specialising in integrated land-use and transport modelling, now part of the WSP Group. If it had to do with computers, I did it: object-oriented analysis and design, programming, documentation, systems administration, customer support, purchasing...

Software Engineer (1989-1992)
At Delcam International, a Computer Aided Design company, programming in Fortran and C++, on UNIX workstations. Involved mainly in database aspects of the company's products.

Research Engineer (1986-1989)
Research and software development at The Welding Institute. Responsible for a program to calculate fatigue strengths and lifetimes, and initiated a European project on expert systems for welding engineers.

Research Engineer (1982-1986)
Research with Det Norske Veritas, the Norwegian register of shipping. Main area of research was probabilistic fracture mechanics, which was how I started to get involved with computers.

Research Student (1978-1982)
PhD in fracture mechanics at Department of Metallurgy and Materials Science, at Cambridge University.

Undergraduate (1975-1978)
Reading Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, Churchill College.
