University History 1200-1450

1209 Scholars migrate from Oxford to Cambridge.
1225 By this year the scholars at Cambridge had a Chancellor with powers delegated by the Bishop of Ely. While the chancellor was nominated by the Masters of the University, his election had to be confirmed by the Bishop of Ely. He was also required to swear an oath of allegiance to the Bishop.
1225 Mendicant friars arrive in Cambridge with the establishment of a Fransiscan house.
1228 Scholars migrate from Paris to Cambridge.
1231 Henry III's writs strengthen the position of the University with respect to the town.
1233 Papal decree of Gregory IX recognises a Studium at Cambridge.
1238 Mendicant Dominican friars establish themselves in Cambridge, alongside the Franscican friars who arrived 10 years earlier.
1261 Town-gown riots lead to damage to University records and property
1268 The University is granted privileges in relation to the assize of bread and beer, and to the conservation of peace
1318 In response to a petition from Edward II, a Papal Bull of John XXII confirms Cambridge's standing as a Studium Generale.
1322 Town-gown riots lead to further vandalism.
1381 Town-gown riots result in increased University privileges
1374 John of Dunwich tries unsuccessfully to refuse the Chancellor's oath of allegiance to the Bishop of Ely
1392 A royal order forbids the Bishop of Ely to call into his court cases that the Chancellor properly considers to be under his jurisdiction. This is the earliest claim to exemption from episcopal jurisdiction.
1401 Papal Bull from Boniface IX states that the Chancellor no longer requires episcopal confirmation. The Chancellor is subsequently elected, rather than only nominated, by Masters.
1433 Papal Bull from Eugenius IV confirms that Cambridge Masters are to be free of all ecclesiastical jurisdictiction
