While the chancellor was nominated by the Masters of the University, his election had to be confirmed by the Bishop of Ely. He was also required to swear an oath of allegiance to the Bishop. |

| 1374 | John of Dunwich tries unsuccessfully to refuse the Chancellor's oath of allegiance to the Bishop of Ely |
| 1392 | A royal order forbids the Bishop of Ely to call into his court cases that the Chancellor properly considers to be under his jurisdiction. This is the earliest claim to exemption from episcopal jurisdiction. |
| 1401 | Papal Bull from Boniface IX states that the Chancellor no longer requires episcopal confirmation. The Chancellor is subsequently elected, rather than only nominated, by Masters. |
| 1433 | Papal Bull from Eugenius IV confirms that Cambridge Masters are to be free of all ecclesiastical jurisdictiction |
