College Foundations 1601-1900

No colleges were founded in the 17th and 18th centuries, a period in which the University population slowly declined. And in the 19th Century, with the exception of Downing College there were no new colleges until 1869.

Towards the end of the 19th century however there were a number of philanthropic foundations that opened up the University to a broader section of society: women, and students that could not afford to attend the traditional colleges.

The only exception to this pattern was St Edmund's House, which arrived in Cambridge marking an increased, if reluctant, tolerance of Roman Catholicism.
