1966 Clare Hall founded

In February 1996 Clare Hall was formally established as an approved foundation. Money was made available by Clare College, the Ford Foundation and the Old Dominion Trust, and administered in trust by Clare College.

Its purpose was to provide a collegiate home for the increasing numbers of research and post-graduate workers, many of whom were senior academics with families.

Building work began on the Herschel road site in the autumn of 1966 and was finished in 1969. In the intervening years, the Master and Fellows of Clare Hall maintained collegiate life by dining together for a period in Clare College Master's Lodge, and then at the University Centre.
