1965 Darwin College founded
In 1963, the colleges of Caius, St John's and Trinity
announced their intention to found a new college to
provide accommodation for the increasing
numbers of graduate students.
Sir Charles Darwin had died in 1962, and his family
had moved out of Newnham Grange and the Old Granary,
which were located by the river on the corner of
Sidgwick Avenue and Grange Road.
With the blessing of his family, the new college was
to take the name of the great scientist,
and to occupy his family home.
A board of trustees was established in 1964, and in
1965 Darwin College was given the status of
Approved Foundation.
