1882 Selwyn Hostel founded
Selwyn College was founded to commemorate Bishop Selwyn
of New Zealand, and later of Lichfield, who died in 1878.
It shared the aims of
Cavendish College and the
Non-Collegiate Students' Board
to broaden the intake of the University.
Selwyn College was however a specifically Anglican
foundation; many students were the sons of
Church of England clergy, and many Selwyn men took
Anglican orders.
In 1883 Selwyn was given the newly recognised
status of University Hostel, but was not fully recognised
as a college until 1926.
