Clare Chapel dates from 1763-9.

It was designed by Sir James Burrough, Master of Caius College. James Essex assisted, and assumed responsibility for the Chapel's completion after Burrough's death in 1764 .

Pevsner is not impressed by the conservative design. Wren's Pembroke Chapel seems to have formed the pattern for the East front. And he thinks the South front is more of the early than of the later 18th century, with its Corinthian pilasters, plain arched windows, and balustrade. Nevertheless it is a harmonious building, extending the College into a difficult space.
