1742 Ashlaring starts
Classicism could be said to have well and
truly arrived in Cambridge, and the medieval
brickwork of many of the Colleges was no longer
desirable.
Thus many brick surfaces were covered with thin slabs
of smooth stone, known as ashlar, to provide a veneer
of classical fashion.
In 1742, Trinity Hall became the first medieval college to be
refaced, or ashlared.
