1719 Emmanuel College Westmoreland Building
Around 50 years after
Wren's Chapel
was completed at Emmanuel College, there were moves to bring the rest of Front Court
more in keeping with the Italian style.
In 1719-22 the South range of the court was rebuilt.
It has three storeys, and was orginally 19 bays wide,
faced with ashlar on the front, and brick with stone quoins at the back.
There is a small central entrance, flanked by two giant Ionic pilasters
judged by
Pevsner to be inadequate.
Certainly the overall effect is understated, which is perhaps
fortunate alongside the Baroque and more modestly dimensioned Chapel.
The building was funded by subscription, the most important
contribution coming from Thomas Fane, the 6th Earl of Westmoreland.
Consequently, after its completion, it was named the Westmoreland
Building, and in 1732 the arms of the then Earl were set up above
the central doorway.
