1557 Gonville and Caius College founded
John Keys, who Latinised his surname in the Renaissance
fashion to "Caius", originally came from Norwich.
He was a Graduate and Fellow of Gonville Hall, then
studied medicine at the famous University of Padua and
became a successful physician in London.
Edward VI and Queen Mary were numbered amongst his
patients.
In 1557 he gave
Gonville Hall
a charter and doubled its endowments.
His name was added to that of Gonville to give the
College its new name, Gonville and Caius,
and his arms were added to the College crest.
He became Master in 1559.
