1557 Gonville and Caius College founded

John Keys, who Latinised his surname in the Renaissance fashion to "Caius", originally came from Norwich. He was a Graduate and Fellow of Gonville Hall, then studied medicine at the famous University of Padua and became a successful physician in London. Edward VI and Queen Mary were numbered amongst his patients.

In 1557 he gave Gonville Hall a charter and doubled its endowments. His name was added to that of Gonville to give the College its new name, Gonville and Caius, and his arms were added to the College crest.

He became Master in 1559.
