1233 Recognition of Studium status

The existence at Cambridge of a Studium, a school with formal facilities for advanced study, was recognised in a papal decree by Gregory IX.

The decree awarded to the scholars of Cambridge the right not to be sued in courts outside the Diocese of Ely, as long as they were willing to answer to the Chancellor or Bishop. Rashdall writes that Gregory IX in the same writ authorised the Bishop of Ely to absolve scholars of Cambridge for iniectio manuum.

Cambridge status as a Studium Generale was confirmed in 1318.
